Nobody would purposefully display their worst moments on Facebook. So you get online and see dozens of happy little lives -- but it's all illusory.
I've found the Internet to be profoundly activating. I become articulate in a way I can no longer be out in public; social anxiety is lifted because I'm not worried about being scrutinized for my awkward gait or looking disheveled.
I've found that playing online games (not obsessively!!) with a static and close-knit group of people has really helped me when my social and sex lives aren't going very well. When you live within walking distance of popular music venues and the gay strip it's very nice to have a distraction that keeps you out of trouble (and away from the bottle).
