Well, you have a point. I probably shouldn't ask so much of myself. I was angry and feeling helpless and impotent.
I agree about the risk, but I can't see that much can be done about it. Even if the posts are challenged. The only possibility I can see is that people have the right to point out that certain types of replies would not be helpful to them and to request that they not be made. The problem is that with Bob no longer moderating the site, what's to keep him from continuing to post them anyway? And it's not like we can warn everyone of this technique. You'd have to put instructions on the posting box.
So I'm not sure anything can help. Not challenging, not warning people to state up front that they don't want that kind of response. Nothing.
The community has no power. We can protest something till we're blue in the face, but the only protection we have is the hope that others will be respectful enough to moderate their behavior. A forlorn hope indeed, when it's in the nature of human behavior to believe that the needs of the community are best met if they post just as they like.
