AAPs as mood stabilizers

I'm officially Bipolar I w/psychotic features. I can't claim expert status on anything, but I will say that I don't think neuroleptics should be viewed as mood stabilizers because for me--and for some other bipolar people I've spoken to--they seem to simply "tranquilize" things away, particularly psychosis. For me, the few times I've been on the psychotic+manic end of things, it took an anticonvulsant+neuroleptic+sedatives to bring me down.

On the depressive end, I work best with a neuroleptic+something to either lift mood or at least reduce remaining agitation, usually an anticonvulsant (although celexa was helpful, too).

I'm not saying that AAPs or even low dose old school AP drugs can't be part of the solution, particularly in cases where psychosis is present, but I am saying that calling a tranquilizer a "mood stabilizer" is more than a little misleading, even though some bipolar I+II and schizoaffective people might be able to do with monotherapy with an antipsychotic.
