You have clearly stated the exact reasons I do not like to suggest to anyone the use of effexor. To be fair, anyone who is on a psychiatric med for 11 years is going to have a real hard time weaning off of it and learning a new life without it. The transition period,no matter how careful the weaning, can be treacherous. It's just that with effexor, the whole scenario is multiplied in intensity by about a factor of 10. It is one of the very worse meds on the planet to try to withdraw from.
Of course, they don't tell you that when you are given the prescription.
Very slow weaning, like you were doing, is the right way. You took a year, well, maybe it needs two years. Other substitutes can help, such as prozac, but not completely eliminate the pain.
The best way to accomplish what you want to accomplish, in my opinion, is not only the slow weaning, but also the education and usage of certain plant medicines. Calming, nausea, insomnia, dark depression....there are good things available to deal with these on a PRN basis throughout the journey, they can change an unbearable impossible journey into a tolerable do-able one, and along the way allow discovery of things that help so that the most recent visit to the psychiatrist turns out to be the last.
