Its amazing to think that it was only since about 1955 that there was any such thing as psychopharmacology..... prior to Thorazine, there were barbiturate sedatives to knock you out, and amphetamines to give you a kick start, but no antidepressants, tranquilizers, antipsychotics.....all they could do was lock you away and give you a heap of Amytal to quieten you down..... then in 10 years, they had Thorazine, Stelazine, Melleril, Valium, Librium, Torfanil, Nardil, Parnate, nortriptyline - 10 years that revolutionised the care of mental illness. We've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.
