Trileptal or Lithium?

I need more of a mood stabilizer. Right now I take low dose Lithium(300mg) and low dose Trileptal (300mg).
My doc says either med is ok to go higher on. I would think Trileptal would be safer, but when I try to up the dose it gives me a bad headache.
I already lose my hair due to a bad thyroid and my hair really gets thin on a higher dose of Lithium.
I would rather use a high dose of Klonopin, but docs don't like that.
