I think it is typically used in a rehab or medical detox (either alone, which is less common) or as a prn during a benzo detox. it's extremely helpful during a benzo detox! phenobarb cuts the risk of/prevents seizures from coming off benzos, and of course, works wonders for anxiety. I know docs still prescribe it for epilepsy, but not for anxiety--it's too toxic and fatal in large doses (which is why benzos were developed--large doses aren't fatal as they can be with barbiturates). that said, phenobarb is a decent med! still waiting for that magic pill for anxiety to be created--one where dependence and addiction isn't a risk. For now, breathing and meditation helps, and when all else fails, the occasional benzo.
