Don't get me wrong; I've done both Paxil and cymbalta cold turkey (both because I was very sick and couldn't keep the meds down) and you can get through it. I don't know that the acute withdrawal causes any long term damage. Just doesn't seem a reasonable suggestion from a pdoc.
