Lithium and peripheral nerve pain

Posted by dearsimone on May 25, 2012, at 12:19:17

Hi All.

I am a professional violinist who has been on low doses of lithium (450 mg down to 150 mg currently) since 2007. For the last six or seven months I have experienced increased fingertip pain in my left hand when I play...now becoming severe. At the time of the onset of pain, I was also coming down off of Cymbalta, and so now conclude that my problems may have begun some time earlier, and had been covered up by C.

This has been an extremely distressing situation. I have not have much time to address it, because in the meantime I was also going through a drastic experience being on and getting off of Zyprexa. (I do not believe the Zyprexa is related to the cause of the fingertip pain, though it must have aggravated it. I started Z after the pain began and was on it only 2 months. I have been off of now for 9 weeks).

Anyway, I am just getting to the point mentally and physically where I can take on this other issue. I see a research-hospital neurologist next week. In the mean time I would like to know: Are they any out there who have experienced even 'minor' peripheral nerve problems while on lithium? or any of the anti-psychotic drugs? If so, how much time did it take for your symptoms to disappear after you stopped the offending med?

(I am also on Seroquel, 112 mg, gabepentin 100 x 3, and fish oil, 6000mg. My diagnosis is for ADHD with cyclothymia (soft bipolar)

It must be noted: I am extraordinarily sensitive to all medications.

At this point I am concerned that I could not bear to hear any stories of symptoms that did not go away. Positive and gentle responses only please-- I am feeling heartsick.

Thanks so much!

I will post my Zyprexa experience some time soon, as vitality continues to return.
