I took NAC a few years ago under the direction of my pdoc for obsessive traits or unipolar depression. I didn't have a prescription; I don't think my insurance would cover it if available over the counter as a dietary supplement. I just got it at a health food store. I took it with my other usual psych meds. I didn't notice any effect from it, but that has also been my case for a lot of prescription meds. (Since then I have gotten on a psych med cocktail that I really like, and have liked for a few years now.) If I recall correctly, my pdoc had me try it based on the research presented by the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation or it's director, an MD with the last name Jenicke (?Sp).
