Triavil is the brand name for varying amounts of elavil+varying amounts of perphenazine. Could be used for depression in schizophrenia (keep in mind, schizophrenia was diagnosed differently back then, so a lot of those people would be considered bipolar or diagnosed with psychotic depression today), agitated+anxious depressive states, and I think severe forms of anxiety.
In practice, a sedating antidepressant plus a neuroleptic could be used for just about anything, and pretty much was used for anything, up until the TD lawsuits of the 80s hit. I read somewhere that family docs were particularly fond of Triavil because it could "fix" a number of states they didn't have the time, inclination, or training to delve into.
