I've been taking valerian on and off for the past several days for my anxiety and depression symptoms (I take it when I feel I need it.). I'm trying to find out if it's a dopamine agonist. One study I read says it has negligible affect on dopamine and another says it affects dopamine levels in almost every area of the brain. I have a skin picking disorder, and dopamine agonists have made it worse. Some anti-depressants affect dopamine, and some don't.
Also, has anyone noticed anti-depressant properties from valerian? It is mainly an anxiety drug, but I've read where it can help depression if taken long-term. So far, I really like it. It is inexpensive and gives me far fewer side effects than most anti-ds I've tried.
