From what I understand, the risk of lithium producing kidney damage is proportional to dosage and blood levels. This would argue in favor of using low dosages to treat unipolar depression. The Harvard research team determined that 300-600 mg was effective when lithium was added to an antidepressant to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). 450 mg was used most often. I am gleaning benefit from 300 mg. It decreases the variability in my depression during the course of a single day as well as day-to-day during the week.
