Major depression with PTSD features. I was also self-harming, had suicidal ideation and was 1-2 years post recovery from anorexia nervosa.
It was my first anti-depressant but I wasn't on it for long, I'd say perhaps 2 weeks. I became catatonic and they didn't know if (a) it was a negative reaction to Luvox, or (b) it was the natural course of my depression and Luvox failed to have any therapeutic effect. Either way, Luvox wasn't helping so I was hospitalized and switched to Celexa. Celexa improved my functioning enough for me to be discharged after a few months, only to attempt suicide shortly thereafter. Thus ends my experience with SSRIs; it wasn't worth trying another.
How would I compare Luvox to Celexa? Well I guess one didn't work at all and the other worked a little bit. The good thing is that apart from the catatonia which may or may not have been caused by Luvox, I didn't notice any side effects with either SSRI.
For me personally, SSRIs pale in comparison to SNRIs, TeCAs and TCAs - but your mileage may vary! In fact, I hope it does. I wish SSRIs worked for me as they have better side effect profiles. But I don't think my response to Luvox was common, if it was a response.
