What gets referred to specialists may vary by region and also the the PCP's (primary care provider, which can be GP, Family Practice Dr, Internist, Pediatrician) preferences and training. Even within a practice it may vary according to the patients preferences and insurance. For instance a PCP may be quite comfortable treating most type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism or depression but will also refer out patients are especially complicated or those who say they'd rather see a specialist.
