Tolerance to the sedation, muscle relaxation, etc. develops much more rapidly than tolerance to the anxiolytic effect. And, as I said in my initial post, tolerance to the anxiolytic effect is not complete. A problem here is that we don't have the language to adequately describe these subjective states.
There are people who can remain at the same dose of a benzo for _decades_ and then all of a sudden the therapeutic effect vanishes--or there can be a paradoxical increase in anxiety.
