Effexor XR or regular Effexor?

Which do most find useful? Which would be easier to discontinue if it didn't work?

Diagnosis: depression and anxiety
Current meds: paxil 20mg., desiprimine 20mg., clonazepam .5mg.
Of meds tried, nortriptyline worked the best but caused major weight gain so d/c
