If you really have Treatment-Resistant Depression, let your doctor know by giving examples and evidence of this. Most doctors will try Parnate (MAOI's) only after alternatives have failed. In my case, I let my doctor know that I had tried many of the contemporary AD's, mood stabilizers, and a few atypical-antipsychotics already with literally no effect. My doctor is young and open-minded, but he still wanted me to try a Tricyclic first before considering Parnate. I think doctors are weary of MAOI's because there are greater health risks associated with it. So be sure to give other medicines a try at first, you never know what will work, but if you have already tried medications to no avail, drive home that point and let your doctor know that nothing has worked.

MAOI's are a good option for people who seem to be resistant to everything else (it has a good track record in this regard). It doesn't work for everyone though, and I myself have only partially benefitted from Parnate, with major issues of anhedonia still existing.

-Good luck though and keep searching for the answer
