For anyone trying to withdrawal from, stay off, or maybe even lower an SSRI or any other highly serotonergic drug, i would highly, highly recommend giving inositol a try. It can be very helpful. ... Or if you are drug free but would like to try something for depression.
It may need several days or so of consistent use to provide noticeable benefit though. So keep that in mind. It's no miracle cure for depression, but for a supplement it is surprisingly effective. It has a very serotonergic feel, so it is perhaps not surprising that it is apparently an important intracellular 2nd messenger of serotonin releasing neurons.
You might be familiar with the small study showing benefit at 12g/day for depression. I would not try to start this high, however, as the GI side effects can get pretty strong if you do (lots of stomach growling and some gas and stuff.)
I would start out w 4 or 5 grams, or about a teaspoon in the morning, and if it's not bad then a few more at night. Even about 5 grams/day was noticeable for me.
It can be found in bulk powder form, and i suggest this over capsules. I personally favored a teaspoon or two in my coffee in the morning and sometimes more in the evening.Spread the word to those who may benefit. The only problem with taking it on a consistent basis is the inconvenience. It's much easier to carry around little pills w you than a bottle of powder.
