This sounds very much OCD (intrusive thoughts and compulsion to relieve them). My suggestion is to try and teach yourself gradually "to take the risk" and not give into your anxiety relieving compulsions.

This is a classic one. If I don't to this I can't stop thinking of it. I've had these many times. The only way to get over them is accepting the fact that you can't force any thoughts out of your head. In fact doing this will only put more importance to them and increase the likelyhood of them returning into your mind. People don't forget by forcing things out of their minds, only by ignoring them.-Ikaros
