Mirtazapine withdrawal, help!

Posted by Keeks on April 10, 2011, at 15:00:02

Hi, I am new to this website, however found it as it seems to have some good information regarding Mirtazapine/Remron withdrawal. My psychiatrist informed me that what I am experiencing is exceptional and abnormal, and she has never heard of anyone having such difficulty with withdrawal. However some posts I found on this site and others state otherwise. I was put on 45mg of Mirtazapine in May 2010 for post partum depression and insomnia, and went down to 30mg in July, against the advice of my shrink. I had bad anxiety and depression, and was hooked on the sleeping pill zopiclone, so couldn't tell what was due to the withdrawal or to my situation. I then went down to 15mg in September without too much trouble. I then tried to go cold turkey to 0 in September, and had horrible anxiety and insomnia, so went back to 7.5mg and stablized. Again I tried to go to 0 and had horrible side effects. I continued to taper over the next few months, each time having days of insomnia and anxiety, which then stabilised. However I have been on 2mg since November 2010, so for 6 months, and yet I have tried 3 times to get off completely and each time it is a disaster: horrible insomnia, anxiety, depression. I KNOW that these are due to the drug withdrawal and not to my "symptoms" coming back. And I need to get off because 1. I don't feel i need this anymore and have never been on an AD in my life, or had depression 2. the Mirtazapine is adversely affecting my hormones, and I have symptoms and blood results of hypothyroidism and adrenal burnout (straw like hair, dark circles under eyes, lethargy, exhaustion, slight weight gain, slowed metabolism, body temp issues, etc...). My psychiatrist says this has nothing to do with the Mirtazapine and everything to do with my "depression", despite the fact that I have not been depressed for the last 6 months, and never been depressed before, nor had any of the above symptoms before. I am convinced based on my knowledge of my body and based on web research that the Mirtazapine is behind this, so I must get off. I wanted to know if anyone else has had similar experiences with Mirtazapine, and what is the prognosis to successfully getting off Mirtazapine? I am also now taking bioidentical hormones and gaba which are helping. No one does a hormone check when you have post partum depression, they just slap you on an anti depressant which further depresses your hormones. It's a scandal! Thanks for any advice.
