Alcohol and metformin/acarbose

Posted by jms600 on February 15, 2011, at 9:14:35

Following a six week period on Zyprexa, I have gain nine pounds - and rising. My p/doc is considering metformin or acarbose (although his preference is metformin) to curb my excessive appetite.

I've tried dieting - and getting a lot more exercise - however, it seems almost impossible to lose any weight. So I guess my doctor will have to do something to help.

I have read that alcohol should not be taken with either metformin or acarbose. As a couple of pints of beer a night is one of the few pleasures I have left in life, I really don't want to give it up - especially as my consumption is only moderate.

Has anyone any experience of drinking alcohol while taking either metformin or acarbose? Is it really that dangerous? Is moderate alcohol consumption safer? Is it safe to drink alcohol at different times to when the drug is actually ingested? Currently, I am not diagnosed with any type of diabetes at present.

Thanks for your posts!
