In reply to is it harmless to stay on a benzo after tolerance, posted by paulb on February 6, 2011, at 9:54:08
Hello - the problem with "tolerance" to any psych med, especially benzos, is that it doesn't usually stay at at that level for long. : (( Tolerance (not getting any or little effect from the benzo) can soon lead to "tolerance withdrawal" whereby you may experience withdrawal symptoms on the very same dosage you have been on. This is how many people start increasing their dosage. I think Phillipa's experience is unusual, because once tolerance sets in, withdrawal usually follows. I'd advise you to not increase the dosage; ask your doctor what you can do if you are experiencing increasing anxiety symptoms on your current dosage. I was fortunate in that I did not have this but I was on a way high dosage of xanax: 3mg. Now I am on 1.5 occasionally 1.75 mg. and do not dare increase. There's the danger. Wishing you the best,
Abby> i wanted to ask if you do build up tolerance to a benzodiazepine. is there no harm in staying it or are there any hazards after you have built up tolerance to watch out for. i would have thought if tolerance sets in you might as well stay on it,
