Help needed Parnate reactionthe

Posted by kirbyw on November 24, 2010, at 20:41:01

I am currently in a Psych hospital for depression, for just the past week. I am came in on 50 mg of Parnate and the Drs. would like to raise the dose to 80 or 90 mg. But 3 out of the last 4 days on 70 mg, I have had a "hypertensive crisis right here in the hospital. They have been giving me 30 mg in the morning at 9 and 40 mg at about 2 pm.

I am on a tyramine free diet, my food is brought to me on a separate tray. I only eat whats on my tray.

My other meds are

1 chewable baby aspirin

10 mg crestor

600 mg Lithium, just started yesterday

Tylenol as needed up to 4 500 mg pills daily for
issues related to prostate pain

Clonazapam 3 mg daily

Seroquel 12.5 at night for sleep

Lopressor (Beta blocker) 50 mg at night

I have blood pressures that are normal in morning up until the second dose, generally 110-70 with mild hypotension when I get up

But in the afternoon for no reason that the Drs can figure I about two hours after my 2nd dose of Parnate my blood pressure has been running 200/120. They use hospital type BP machines here.

It drops very slowly after peaking at 200 or so. Yesterday they gave me hydrolozin to lower the pressue. There is some confusion becaus with handle held blood pressur cuff, which they claim in more accurrate its usually a little lower than with the digital machines, but only about 20 points lower so still about 170-180 over about 100

In all my years of Parnate use this this has never happened to me. However its been about 15 years since I took a dose above 50 mg. and Now I am at 70 mg, I am 63 years old with a successful heart by-pass 3 years ago

I want to raise the parnate dose higher as I am still depressed, but I don't have a clue as why the blood pressure reaction is taking place in the opposite of the expected direction.

Any ideas are welcome. If someone ones to talk by phone about this to go into more detail, let me know if you have an e-mail that I can send my phone number to you.
