I've heard of it. I think it stems from a sense of meaninglessness.
...a sort of philosophical consideration of your existence as less than meaningful and relatively small in the great scheme of things.
I think its about setting aside expectations, what is "supposed" to be, and recognizing what is. I think there can be great freedom in this realization, but also great disappointment and hopelessness. giving up societal expectations or recognizing them as simply that...something like that, and finding your own meaning, creating your own life.

also, there can be feelings of isolation, how can one person really know another?

I get the meaningless thing, but that's where I think your values become important, knowing what you really believe in.
