In reply to Is Parnate worth trying if SSRIs work somewhat?, posted by bearfan on October 3, 2010, at 19:12:16
> My Doctor is okay with the idea of me going on Parnate, but I read quite a bit of disadvantages with the use (including fating, low blood pressure that causes ED, extreme fatigue etc.) plus all the drug and food restrictions. I'd say the SSRIs give about 65% remission but usually leave me sexless. Its a harder decision due to the fact I have to washout of the SSRI before I can take it, wait to it to work (which it might not).
I might be a bad example, but MAOI's have severe and hefty side-effects, not just the food restrictions either. I would on recommend them as a last resort only.
Have you tried an ssri with some other med? (not sure what... but a med combo?)
I couldn't take Parnate due to the side effects, but took Nardil and now I can't get rid of the overheating/sweating side effect which in effect "somewhat" ruined my life. I can no longer stand any humidity, cannot move to a warmer climate, like I had planned.. can't really go to a beach, unless I'm in the water, constantly, etc, etc, etc. That's only ONE side effect. Been off Nardil for 2 months? I forget, the side effect still has not gone away. 2 people have told me that they think (for them) the side effect is not going away. I would avoid it just for that reason alone. There can be sexual side effects, if you are a man (inorgasmia), insomnia, and high blood pressure, and a plethora of other things... go to drugs.com and look it up. Nardil for example, has 2 pages of side effects. If you overheat on Nardil, you can actually get a heat stroke and die. Nice.
