I think our pills can produce remission in perhaps 5% to 10% of patients, some sort of minimal to modest improvement in 50%, and worsening or confounding in 40%. What they can't do is stop the progression of the disease that is causing the depression in the first place.
Psych meds: Can help symptoms, sometimes rarely dramatically, can make things worse. Cannot cure disease. Potential to improve quality of life temporarily but rarely permanently, but efficacy is lower in the real world than in the research world.
Other meds: Can resolve symptoms via elimination or suppression of the depression causing disease.
Both are better than either alone.
