> JayNone of the beta blockers are reliably effective for anxiety. Some people find them very useful but others obtain no benefit. Certain physical symptoms such as 'racing heart' and tremor can be ameliorated. Psychological symptoms of anxiety are not reduced directly, but may be reduced indirectly due to a reduction in physical symptoms. Some physical symptoms, such as muscle tension, are not affected by beta blockade.
Propranolol is the most widely used beta blocker for anxiety. Other beta blockers may cause fewer side effects. Cardioselective beta blockers such as metoprolol will still help to reduce cardiac symptoms of anxiety, but will not reduce tremor.
