Parnate - Questions Please Read

Posted by angels78 on August 6, 2010, at 21:00:50

Hey everyone if you don't know me my name is Mike I go by Angels78 on the board. We'll I want take sometime and ask some experienced Parnate users some specific questions about the medication. Before I get into my questions, I'd like to fill you in on a quick background of my diagnosis:
I suffer from severe social phobia/agoraphobia/panic attacks. I have been this way for the last 4 years. I've taken SSRI's, then recently Nardil for the past 3.5 months and it helped me. I also augment Nardil with 1 mg klonopin a day. The last four years socially were horrible, I couldn't even do things like go the mall and walk around, or even go to the store because of my agoraphobia. Since I've been taking Nardil I found at 60mg was the correct dose for me, I was actually able to go outside, sure I had some fear still, but I was actually able to go out of the house and do things, which I haven't done in quite sometime. Anyone with delibating social phobia knows how it can be, awful at times. Well, the bad thing about Nardil I noticed was the horrible weight gain. Sure I had insominia, sexual side effects, but it evenually past within 2 months, but the weight gain never past. I went from 170-215lbs in 3 months. I ate the same as I did before and my belly, oh boy lets not get into that =P.

We'll I decided with my Pdoc that since I've tried Nardil and it was successful why not give Parnate a try and since weight gain isn't a side effect, lets see if it still has positive effects on my social phobia/agoraphobia and panic attacks.
I meet with him again next week to get it prescribed, so I would like to ask a few questions to anyone whose taken Parnate for social phobia. I do not have any depression, and I understand its a major depressive medication, but I still have heard it is used for Social Phobia.

1.Has anyone had success with parnate for social phobia, and at what dose did you find it was most helpful?

2.I understand the diet restrictions for MAOI's, is Parnate a tad bit more lienient than Nardil?

3.I understand Parnate acts somewhat as a stimulant, does this mean I'll become a "motor mouth" like I was on Nardil or even worse?

4.I've read that Nardil > Parnate for social phobia, does anyone disagree with this, can Parnate still be effective for SP even if you don't have any depression?

5.What side effect is most common with Parnate besides Insomnia? sexual side effects?

6.Will Parnate make me tired like Nardil did for the first few weeks?

7.I take Ambien usually 20 mg a night, 2 10mg tablets a night to sleep, is it safe to take with Parnate? Also is a benzo like Klonopin safe to augment with Parnate during the day?

9.Last but not least, why is Nardil considered better for SP than Parnate?

I know there's alot of questions and alot of reading there, I would really like to get your guys' insight into Parnate. If anyone can help me out with a few of the questions I have about Parnate I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
Mike
