When I had a hypertensive crisis I would say I started feeling it an hour after I ate the monterey jack cheese (unmelted - I have eaten melted before without problem). It started off with a bad headache. My blood pressure was high. I freaked out. I bit into and swallowed a nifedipine capsule and took a taxi to the ER. My BP shot up to something SCARILY high. I went to the counter totally in pain and the first thing they want is the $100 co-pay. Are you f***ing kidding me?? There was no one in the ER but for some reason I had to wait for a long time with this horrible headache. Eventually, with just the nifedipine I took myself, the BP came down gradually. A few hours later (4am) I walked back home and went to sleep. I will never eat monterey jack cheese, unmelted, again.
And what's with pdoc's saying no one really prescribes MAOIs anymore? On this board alone I've seen a lot of postings about them. I know at least at my teaching hospital the residents are at the least aware of MAOIs as a viable option. Risks aside, MAOIs can help when nothing else has worked or only has worked so much or has stopped working.
