If I recall correctly, 5-htp is a sort of serotonin precursor...your body uses the pills to create serotonin, which then acts on depression, anxiety, etc. Its kind of like an SSRI, except your body gets a quick boost of serotonin, instead of getting a boost through inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (and numerous other neurotransmitters).
I'd just be afraid of serotonin syndrome b/c it seems like putting that extra serotonin in your system while using a reuptake inhibitor could be trouble...plus the poster is on such a low dose of effexor that it seems like just trying the 5-htp might be the safest way to go. If the 5-htp fails to help, try a higher dose of the effexor or a different treatment.
