Link, this may not be what you want to hear, but every choice we make about anything is made on partial and conflicting information. You never have all the facts. It's true that at this particular point in medical history there is an explosion of information, research, case studies, trials, etc. on psych meds. That makes it harder to decide which drugs are right for you than, say, when you are given a choice between three or four hypertension meds; but in principle you still never know for sure.
It seems like the best we can do is inform ourselves and find professionals we trust to advise us, then decide; when a particular path proves unproductive, we have to reevaluate & make another decision. (In the current economic setup, especially in the US, because of the way corporate profit drives the system, those professionals are highly constrained in the kind of therapy they can offer.) I think people have come to expect an answer that is once & for all, finished, written in stone -- Americans are especially prone to this -- but that's just not how life works. Every moment is a decision & we never have enough to go on. We're always flying by the seat of our pants.
Sorry to go all general & philosophical on you. I agree that figuring out psych drugs can be really frustrating, but it helps a little to shift one's perspective just enough so we're not always looking for the silver bullet, the final answer. Ain't no such thing.
