In reply to How do you find a Pdoc thats open minded and, posted by Laney on April 1, 2010, at 11:49:45
It was a ton of work, but at one time I did a big project. I got pdoc names from the yellow pages. I made a letter, with a copy for each, and a self addressed stamped envelope for each, to make it easy for them to respond to me.
In my letter I briefly described my history, what treatments I want to try, what I've done, and what characteristics I like in a pdoc. (such as accessability, open mindedness, exerience with maois, who would you recommend your depressed child see, whatever is important to you)
I got responses back from maybe 10% of them. Of those, I did followup on the phone. I ended up choosing someone that was exactly what I wanted.
I think it takes more work than we would like to admit to find a real good doctor. We have to be specific in what we are looking for, and then set out with all the creativity we can think of to find who that person is. That means phone, phone, phone, letters, more phone, referrals, internet.
I've never done it and didn't think about it till right now, but maybe you could schedule an affordable 15 minute visit to not discuss yourself, but to discuss what you want to see in a doctor and whether the person sitting in front of you is that person or not.
