I Have in the last year changed Docs from one who was closed-minded and not 'with me', he also was involved in addiction medicine-not good when a patient requires Controlled drugs-Cll (US). I was diagnosed Adult ADD as an adult at 31, after 5 AD failures, GP give ups and much misery, and started with generic Methylphenidate 10mg IR tabs, ending up on 20mg Q.I.D.
Well my new Gp actually listens to me and my experiences. After a year off Methylphenidate and on 60mgs Fluoxetine, my mood was 'stable' but the SSRI 'blars' got quite bad. I was reasesed and indeed adult ADD (a questionable diagnonis-i know) was verified. Brand name Norvartis Ritalin SR20mg tablets (which are actually smaller then the 10mgIR tabs) 2 B.I.D was added and the mental blars subsided.
feeling that depression was not entirely the picture, we reduced the Fluox to 20mg, and in consultation with my Doc gradually rose the Ritalin dose to 40mgSR T.I.D, 120mg daily. A largish dose but she was still scripting me 30mg Diazepam daily, which i hardly felt the need for (higher Ritalin doses are more satisfactory for anxiety than benzos with mental peace) with 5mgs PRN being satisfactory. This lead to a large excess of uneeded Diazepam with~500 5mg tabs i have around now not needed-this after 8 years of benzo issues.
My main point is this, sure 10-20mg Valium makes lots of non psych troubled folk relaxed, and 10-15mg of amphetamine raises the mood and energy in many 'normal' folk, BUT ADULT ADD and anxiety disorders are real and deserve real, whatever is required treatment.
The sun shines again:)
