Prozac does not cost the NHS £25 per box. Currently, it costs the NHS less than £5 per box. The price was reduced substantially in January 2009 to £1.53 per box, but was increased up to £5.00 (£4.25 after discount) in October 2009 due to a shortage. Generic fluoxetine currently costs the NHS less than £1.50 per box.
As you are aware, generic fluoxetine is very widely prescribed in the UK. Brand-name Prozac is not commonly prescribed. GPs are well within their rights to prescribe Prozac if they believe that the brand is necessary, and indeed some GPs do.
