Hi Tepi
Unfortunately, I'm no chemist so I can't tell you it's exact mode of action. I know it works at the GABA sites in the brain as do benzos but I'm not sure as to what it actually does. Maybe a search on google and wikipedia may throw something up.
However, I can comment on my experiences of it as I've been taking it for around four months now for GAD and panic disorder. I have to say that I found it to be no miracle drug. It's not had a great effect on my anxiety but it has had a slightly noticeable one.
I started on 300mg per day - 150mg twice a day. People say that it produces a great effect the first few times you take it; however, all it did for me was make me feel a bit happy for around an hour or so - and that was basically it!
However, it did have a slower more gradual effect, which was to reduce the background anxiety, when I took the pregabalin everyday. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great effect - I'm still taking various other drugs for anxiety aswell - but there is a subtle effect, with me, that pregabalin seems to exert.
It seemed to take weeks rather than days for the effect to become noticeable. I'm now on 600mg per day as I seemed to have some of the anxiety return. Beware that tolerance is an issue with this drug so you need to watch out for it.
I have taken pregabalin with diazepam. It seemed to make the effects from the diazepam a little stronger.
Pregabalin is definitely worth a try if you can get it prescribed; however, be mindful that tolerance is a problem.
