At one point I tried a combination of SAMe and NADH, and it was actually quite powerful, although I didn't take it long enough to see if it would cure depression. If I was stuck on a desert island with nothing but supplements, I would try SAMe for depression.
St. John's Wort is also widely thought to have a genuine effect, although I haven't tried it personally.
5-HTP is certainly more than just placebo, but again, I haven't taken it for long enough to evaluate it for depression. It feels weak.
