If you give Augmentin to a healthy non-infected person, side effects are likely to be decreased appetite, maybe some heartburn, minor stuff. It actually has a fairly benign profile and is generally one of the easiest ABXs to tolerate.
I would place money on it that you have begun a Herxheimer reaction. It feels bad and scary, but is actually a good thing. Do you know why? Because it means you just discovered something you did not previously know. That is, you do indeed have an unsuspected infection that has found a home in your nervous system and brain. I know everyone here gets sick of hearing me say lyme, so I won't say it. That is one of about a dozen possibilities of critters that can seriously screw with the brain.
Your bad reaction is not psychiatry. It is diagnostic of a serious infection.
When bad organisms live, they excrete very powerful neurotoxins. When they die in mass, they excrete huge amounts your liver and kidneys cannot flush the toxins out fast enough. That is in addition to their millions of body parts and corpses floating around in you. That sends your whole immune system and nervous system into a state of short circuit panic confusion. That is a Herxheimer reaction, and yours shows a strong neurological component, meaning the brain is involved in this infection.
If it is a minor infection, the Herx will last a few days. A more severe infection, a few weeks. For a longstanding chronic infection, a couple months or even longer.
Another term for Herx is "healing crisis". The key word is healing, even though it feels like death. Well, it is death...the death of the things that have been causing your psychosis and depression the whole time, the death of the things that made Lamictal so bad for your brain, on an on...your whole case history fits the profile like a glove. Unfortuneatly, the same symptoms you've been battling for so long will get worse on ABX until enough of the critters have been killed that you turn the corner and start feeling better than you remember in a long time.
Probably one of the most common things that happens in a Herx is depression or worsened existing depression. When it is real bad, psychosis happens. These are powerful neurotoxins. That explains to me why psych meds haven't worked, except for that short time on Seroquel which was either a random fluke or mysterious accident.
I am convinced at this time that if you were able to get treatment from an infectious disease specialist for the next few months, instead of a psychiatrist, you would have a real shot at getting remarkably well compared to where you've been with all the psych meds. It's the neurotoxins screwing you up, not psychiatry.
My opinion. That's how I see it. Been following you a long time.
