This is DEFINITELY something that occurs in normal populations and is called normal hallucinosis. These sleep phenomena are called (when its falling asleep) hypnogogic hallcuinations and (when its waking up) hypnopompic hallucinations. Though this occurs with normal populations, it most often occurs if one has narcolepsy and, if one doesn't not have narcolepsy, then it can occur because of 1) sleep deprivation and 2) anxiety.
I know how scary that is. I wish I would've asked someone when they started for me last year, b/c I was terrified of them. Now I think they're kind of sweet--b/c I don't get them that often when I'm on an SSRI (SSRIs are known to reduce REM sleep, and these hallucinations are REM sleep occurring basically as you fall asleep), I feel like I miss them a little.
What I DON'T miss, and which I wish would go away forever, is "brain chatter." Apparently a form of tinnitus, it sounds like there is dinner chatter, but you can't make out the words or voices--its like hearing all the noise associated with a restaurant or something. That is really freaking scary.
