Long term MAOI use slows DA system firing rates

Posted by myco on March 30, 2009, at 22:21:36

Recently came across an article that suggests that prolonged use of MAOIS (study uses clorgyline, deprenyl and phenelzine) will decrease the firing rate of dopamine systems using rats as models. Short term use of MAOI's had no effect on inhibition/decrease of DA firing rates. They were able to "restore" DA to it's normal firing rate under the use of clorgyline with the short term addition of para-chlorophenylalanine.

Any comments on this? Anyone used para-chlorophenylalanine or some other compound to increase DA effect while on a MAOI long term?
