I hear ya. I'm very careful with Xanax. I only take it for sleep once in a while, and I usually only take 0.25 mg, which is tiny.
I had taken trazodone once, and that worked pretty well, but there was quite an interesting side effect in the beginning...I won't get into specifics. The other weird thing about trazadone was that it absolutely did not work unless I took it with food. Now, a lot of drugs say "take with food," but a lot of that is just to prevent upset stomach. Like clockwork, if I took trazodone on an empty stomach, it was as if I had taken nothing at all. I figured this out and then started eating something with it. It would usually just be something small like a granola bar, and that would be enough....However, at the expense of sounding like a whiner, it was just kind of a pain having to do that every time I wanted to go to sleep.
