Hi.

I think using a dopamine receptor agonist is a treatment with a rather low probability of success. It does not tend to make people feel very well for extended periods of time. I have seen it help initially, though. If you choose to try one of these compounds, stay away from cabergoline and pergolide. They act to damage heart valves (valvulopathy) via agonizing 5-HT2b receptors. Although there is still debate about how often this occurs at low dosages, if you have alternatives, I would try those first. Mirapex (pramipexole) might have the best chance of helping. Unlike bromocriptine, which is restricted to D2 receptor agonism in the striatum and related structures, pramipexole works to stimulate both D2 and D3 receptors in the limbic system. The limbic system is responsible for feelings of reward and elevated mood.

Since none of us have a crystal ball for fortune telling, I would not presume to issue a recommendation to avoid Mirapex or Requip due to a lack of efficacy. You might very well benefit from them to make them worth keeping in your treatment regime.

Good luck.
