A good trained psychiatrist is worth money, thats a truism -- but there's no psychiatrist that is going to have all the answers.
You may develop a relation with one and decide you want a second opinion -- I wouldn't suggest a second psychiatrist if you've been with one for years unless you really have come to ends because it takes time to build a relationship.
Nobody really needs to see a "psychiatrist to the stars"... it doesn't mean that your psychiatrist may or may not have written books... certainly hopefully journal articles in their field.
(I mean you can see a 'concierge doctor' if you have that kind of money, but seriously....)
Generally a good psychiatrist will have in depth knowledge in psychopharmacology and polypharmacy issues (multiple medications).
A number of psychiatrists in private practice may not deal with insurance because of the difficulty of it, that depends -- it also opens up your records to the insurance company so that is something to think about even under HIPAA.
Also if you are going to be with one for a longer period they may reduce their fees because you may meet more frequently.
...what to look for is years in practice, knowledge and specialty in treating your particular type of problem, no major violations (obviously -- you can look up for most states at their government website)...
...disclosure of any work with pharmaceutical companies -- this is merely honesty, a lot of psychiatrists may have been asked to review something or whatever
...but most importantly I think, someone who has or is currently working in academia, someone with ties to a major teaching hospital and university in your area.
