I take both Wellbutrin XR and Provigil, and it's a good combination for me. (I also take Vyvanse, in case that's relevant.)
For me, Provigil augments the antidepressant action of Wellbutrin -- and I'll admit, Wellbutrin is not a particularly robust AD for me. It's just the most tolerable AD for me, and it is generally effective enough to keep a floor under my feet. The Provigil boosts that to a pretty strong response, although I don't think I can say I've hit remission.
And the Vyvanse counters some of the flightiness that I get on the WB/P cocktail.
Also, whether or not that's a reasonable combination for you, based on your prior experience with Wellbutrin, depends in large part on what you mean by nearly becoming psychotic.
