I don't think they were making it up James - just a few weeks ago I went to three different pharmacies in town and none of them had any preparations containing promethazine. I thought there was something up after that. I asked for Avomine on the pretext of having travel sickness (they never were happy about dispensing Phenergan as a sleep aid), but they had none of that in stock either. This is the fourth one I've been to and they were the first to just tell me it had been restricted as a prescription only medicine. On the other hand I've just ordered some Avomine from an online outlet and it went through. I don't know how up to date they are though.

Well that would be a good reason to want to stop OTC sales. They do seem to suspect you're up to mischief if you ask for a any preparation by name rather than asking for help with a particular complaint. There was once 'a problem with the manufacturer' when I asked for some Nytol One a Night. I was withdrawaing from clonazepam and was quite wild eyed and desperate for sleep - so probably even more suspect in the eyes of the pharmacist. I suppose a similar thing could be happening here, but I think there might be something to it.
