I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant, so I have a few months to consider what med I will first consider for a bipolar 2 diagnosis. I have a long history of panic, depression, and depersonalization, and a long family history of bipolar/schizoaffective, but no personal history of a "classic" mania, just some episdoes that could be disphoric mania. Anyway, I've never been treated for BP, only uni-polar depression and anxiety. I've been on zoloft (great then poop out), lexapro (kept me out of crisis but no remission), and klonopin (awesome for anxiety issues). I'm on nothing right now, and looking forward to trying something new post-partum--preferably a mood stabilizer, since I am starting to accept that I am most likely BP, and my P-Doc is agreeing. I have been quite depressed for many years now, mixed with irritability and extreme sensitivy, carb cravings etc.
I am leaning toward Lithium, the old standby. But Lamictal intrigues me as well--but I did have an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin, so I don't know if that makes me more likely to get the dreaded rash. Love the idea of Topomax, because it is supposed to reduce appetite and I am quite overweight (even when not pregnant), but studies seem to show pretty weak evidence that it is good for bp.
Anyone want to suggest a first line med here? I want to suggest one to my p-doc, because he is WAY too trendy in my opinion, suggesting Geodon or other APs to be used as mood stabilizers. Since I'm not psychotic, I'd like to take baby steps here and use research-backed meds.
Thanks in advance for your time.
