In reality it takes about 6 months and almost everyone and i mean everyone gets turned down the first time unless you're legally retarded or locked up monthly in a padded cell because your neighbors dog is telling you to kill tom cruise.
This is when you find a SSI lawyer for your appeal. Essentially you go in and do an interview and if they think you'll win they do it for free and you pay them when you receive the lump sum they give you for back pay from the 6 or 7 months it took you to apply and appeal.
When you get a lawyer you go to a hearing and see a judge and im not quite sure what happens here because my original case was stupid and i really didnt know what was wrong with me and hadnt seen anyone outside of a GP and one psychologist.
Medical records are considered evidence and the more evidence the better off you are. See psychiatrists and psychologists and people that specialize in general. They'll help you out quite a bit more than a plain old doctor as far as evidence goes.
