Hi Phillipa,
Do you mean, is Umami MSG? No, no - it's just like you said about there being sweet, salty, sour & bitter but "they've" discovered a 5th distinct taste now called Umami (which is described as savory, meaty, or brothy).
It was always there, just not recognised as a distinct "taste" class.
As I understand it, the connection with MSG is that it's your ability to taste Umami that explains why MSG works.
In regards to your loss of taste, I would definitely want to try some of those berries if it was me. Just don't think too much about the difference in price between what the poor African with the bush gets vs what you'll have to pay ;)
