Yes, benzodiazepines for good or worse, generally replacing more harmful quaaludes and barbiturates and other agents around the time were developed by Leo Sternbach, a Holocaust period escapee who recently passed away at 97 (was still active at 95).
Librium came from the lab in 1956 and is still used for alcohol detoxification. It is a very weak benzodiazepine. Valium greatly increased the effectiveness of a benzodiazepine, and others followed, Xanax being the last around 1981. There has been more than 50 years of medical knowledge of benzodiazepines and that also is generally probably a reason, besides no further economic status of any truly (not Xanax XR) novel agents, why they are dispensed generic where available worldwide.Mogadon is not available in the US.
