Using low-dose Emsam with Effexor?

Posted by satsumas on June 2, 2008, at 20:20:02

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's OK to use a very low dose of Emsam with Effexor. I've done some research online and it seems a 5mg dose of oral selegiline with an SSRI is OK, because at that dose there is no risk of MAO-A inhibition.

So, if I cut a 6mg Emsam patch into fourths, by the math that 6mg Emsam = 20mg oral seligiline, I should be OK using 1.5mg Emsam with 300mg Effexor. (I also started on Mirapex 1.5mg / day last week).

Does this make sense? Is there something about Emsam that makes it different from selegiline in terms of it's MAO-A/B selectivity at even a low dose?

Thanks. I just put on a 1/4th of a 6mg patch so we'll see what happens. I'm watching for serotonin syndrome...
